It should be noted, however, that the histoblast is developed near a large trachea, a cross-section of which is shown in, which represents sections of these parts of the first, second, third and fourth instars respectively.
Swiss (62% second and 27% third instars) and Mt. Hood (62% second and 16% third instar) larvae showed similar and more advanced development than the Salem and Scherzinger populations (53% and 51% first instars and 45% second instars, respectively) (Fig. 4).
This difference in size is not restricted to adults, but it can also be seen in pupae (Fig. 3C, D) and wandering 3rd instars respectively (controls: 954 μm ± 45.6 μm; experimental animals: 696 μm ± 68 μm; difference is statistically significant - p < 0.05).
By using a quantitative ELISA, we demonstrated that ladybird larvae contained 0.7 and 0.5 μg Cry1Ab/g fresh weight in the first and second instar, respectively, when fed continuously with Bt maize-reared spider mites.

We associated 12,675 and 12,948 target genes to 423 known and 696 novel miRNAs in the third day of the fifth instar, respectively (Additional file 17: Table S12 and Additional file 18: Table S13).

Among the previously characterized neuropeptide GPCRs, adipokinetic hormone receptor, diuretic hormone receptor and Bommo-myosuppressin (BMS) receptor were highly expressed in fat body, Malpighian tubules and the prothoracic gland of the last instar larvae, respectively.
Indispensable role at the whole organism level has been shown in Drosophila in which homozygous P-element insertions into the U12 and U6atac snRNA genes were found lethal at early embryogenesis and at the 3rd larval instar stage, respectively [18].
If the trpm1 larvae were maintained on 30 mM Mg2+ during day one or two (1st and 2nd instar larvae, respectively), there was a relatively mild decrease in protein content, and exposure to high Mg2+ during day three only had little effect (Figure 2D).
