"Where there are instances of obese passengers whose bodies protrude extensively into an occupied adjacent seat, we may ask that they purchase a second seat at the same price or take a later flight," says Richard Hedges, director of corporate communications, Europe and Pacific, at American.
Mr. Parker pointed out that the most egregious instances of passenger strandings in recent years involved flights diverted by bad weather to airports that didn't have enough gates or were otherwise unable to handle a sudden influx of planes.
"Reported instances of unruly passengers rose approximately 29 percent between 2009 and 2010, and that follows an estimated 27 percent rise between 2008 and 2009," Perry Flint, a spokesman for the association, said in an interview.
While it's certainly shocking, there have been similar instances of deceptive passengers trying to get away with hiding banned items in seemingly innocuous carry-on items (see: stun gun in Marlboro pack).
