In a similar manner, we inspected the conservation of D. melanogaster miRNAs in nematodes, flies and humans.
To enrich further for true miRNA precursors, we selected sequences displaying the bimodal conservation pattern typical of microRNAs [6] by visually inspecting the "conservation" track in the UCSC genome browser (Figure 1).
