Ever generous with his insights, Lancaster, who lectured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and served as curator of Prospect Park (a mere two and a half miles from his Brooklyn Heights apartment), took special pleasure in enlivening brut erudition with an effervescent enthusiasm that would appeal to people who weren't necessarily academics or antiquarians.
Although he gained his reputation in the field of art history, he was determined to discover the relationships between all schools of knowledge, and he shared his insights and enthusiasm in lectures and books, aided by his remarkable photographic memory of both books he had read and works of art he had seen.
That insight came from "Cheap Lecture" (2009), a whimsical and smart duet by the British choreographer Jonathan Burrows and the Italian composer Matteo Fargion that was performed over the weekend at Danspace Project as part of a larger examination of this team's 's work of the last decade.
The observations and insights made in the lectures were amplified later in his Cartesian Meditations (1933) and Crisis.
That insight culminated in the lecture series, Global Recon.
Gero Steinberg (University of Exeter, UK) presented a spectacular Chair's Choice talk on long-distance endosome trafficking that drives fungal effector production, whereas Alga Zuccaro's (University of Cologne, Germany) plenary lecture provided novel insights into the molecular mechanisms driving endophytic interactions in plants, obtained from genomic studies in sebacinoid root endophytes.
Logan's view of Auden's idiosyncrasies is certainly a possible one, but as many Shakespeare scholars and others have already attested, Auden has clearly wonderful insights into Shakespeare in these lectures, and a less prejudiced reviewer would have recognized and considered them.
