These days, the weighty deliberations of where to insert a comma, when to remove a joke, and how to figure out the right headline take place largely over e-mail.

David Marsh, editor of the Guardian style guide, writes: You don't need to insert a comma between clauses, but doing so can make the sentence easier to read (as with this one).
So Donald Hall writes in his enchanting memoir, and what's admirable about that sentence is not just the pleasure in coming across such a cheeky volley in the opening pages of an account of a life in our post-Freudian age, but the choice Hall made not to insert a comma between "childhood" and "nothing".
Looking back, I hope my work mattered -- that one day a former student, writing an important office memo on, say, a new pickling process, will come to a nonessential clause, recognize it as such, and suddenly Get It: she'll insert a comma in the right place.
