It is well documented that nuclear localisation signals often contain lysine arginine inner repeats separated by non-specific residues (Martelli et al, 1999).
The centromeres in S. pombe are arranged with a core centromere region containing a central sequence (cnt) flanked by two inverted inner repeats (imr) that share exact identity, which is further flanked by the pericentromeric outer repeat region (otr) that contains multiple copies of dg and dh repeat sequences (Fig. 1).
Each centromeric flank can be divided into two regions: the inner repeats (imr), which are specific to each of the three centromeres, and the outer repeats (otr), which are composed of elements known as dg and dh (Bjerling and Ekwall, 2002).
