Molecular dynamic simulations are applied to study inner sphere reorganization effects on outer-sphere electron transfer (ET) reactions.
Emphasis is made on the modelling of the inner-sphere reorganization and the works of approach, as well as on the consideration of reaction layer as an orientational ensemble of reagents.
The inner-sphere reorganization energy λ ij 0 for charge transfer between two VB states i and j can be computed as follows: (i) the geometry of the gas-phase solute is optimized for both charge states; (ii) λ ij 0 for the i → j reaction is given by the difference between the energies of the charge state j in the two optimized geometries.
A standard heterogeneous electron-transfer rate constant of ko=5×10−3 cm s−1 was obtained according to the method of Nicholson, 20 which indicated a substantial contribution of the inner-sphere-reorganization energy (λi) to the electron-transfer process, as is frequently the case in organic redox couples, 21 including pyridine derivatives that contain strongly electron-withdrawing groups.
