In addition, speech production is thought to involve the supplementary motor area (SMA), anterior cingulate cortex, and insula for selection, sequencing, and initiation of motor speech [Dronkers, 1996; Jurgens, 2009; Tremblay and Gracco, 2009], as well as premotor and parietal areas for planning of purposeful utterances [Grabski et al., 2012; Jurgens, 2002].
In general, analysis using a GEE identified significant differences in the initiation of turns of speech by the simulated relative between the two groups (Table 2).
It is well accepted that the removal of the unilateral SMA can be accomplished without significant permanent deficits, even though the SMA controls important functions, which include initiation of motor activity and speech [ 51].
Consistent with this possibility, the bilateral pre-SMA is a region that has previously been associated with the planning and preparation of movement, initiation of movement on cues, and higher order aspects of speech (e.g., Petrides et al. 1993).
