"initial preference" is a correct and usable phrase in written English.
It refers to a person's first or primary choice or inclination towards something. It can be used in a variety of contexts, particularly when discussing decision-making or choices. Example: "My initial preference was to study business in college, but after taking a few classes, I realized my true passion was in literature."
