By miR-9 ISH combined with Gfap and Rbfox3 immunostaining analysis in adult mouse brains, it became clear that miR-9 was expressed in neurons (Rbfox3+), but not in astrocytes (Gfap+), consistent with the notion that miR-9 inhibited the astroglial program.
While Ngn1 could both activate the neurogenic program and simultaneously inhibit the astrogliogenic program, miR-9 appeared to be only involved in the inhibition of glial fate.
