Our most surprising finding is that gene flow is taking place across Cape Agulhas, which has been identified as major oceanographic barrier to gene flow in all intertidal and shallow water inhabitants studied to date [ 13- 15, 17].
Adult inhabitants studied in 1994 had the highest serum HCB levels ever found (mean = 36.7 ng/mL) (To-Figueras et al. 1997), and levels of HCB in the cord serum of newborns from this population studied in 1999 were among the highest ever reported (Sala et al. 2001).
Unlike most European countries, however, it is ethnically homogeneous, so much so that genetic researchers have used its inhabitants to study hereditary disorders and develop cures for a host of diseases.
