UK human food laws already require meat products to be labelled with Quantitative Ingredient Declarations (QUID), which provide both the source and relative abundance of each meat ingredient [ 4].
"The declaration of ingredients shall appear with such prominence and conspicuousness as to render it likely to be read and understood by ordinary individuals under normal conditions of purchase," and must be presented "in letters not less than 1/16 of an inch in height and without obscuring design, vignettes, or crowding". Id.
A full declaration of ingredients in articles could better cope with a growing candidate list and increasing information about other hazardous substances.
The cosmetics, containing mineral oil, used in the experimental induction of arthritis, however, still contain mineral oil according to their actual declaration of ingredients.
Therefore, food and drug legislation demands producers to provide a proper declaration of ingredients, e.g. by naming species components of food products [ 1, 2].
The qualitative and quantitative declaration of food ingredients is important to consumers, especially for genetically modified food as it experiences a rapid increase in sales.
Among these products, the peanut allergen Ara h 1 DNA could be detected in 12 products labelled containing peanut ingredients, in two without a declaration of peanut and one labelled that was produced in a facility that produced peanut-containing foods.
This could be the labeling of all contained SVHCs or even the full declaration of hazardous ingredients of an article on a package leaflet.
The method was successfully applied to bakery (e.g. bread) and vegetarian (e.g. non-meat sausages) food products that contain or may contain soya and/or lupin as ingredient or contaminant (according to the declaration on the product label).
"That's because they contain soy, but soy is not listed in the ingredient line or in the allergen declaration on some packages," a Kraft spokesperson said in an email to The Times.
