These engineering marvels are documented in a new book, "Industry, Architecture and Engineering: American Ingenuity 1750-1950" by Louis Bergeron and Maria Teresa Maiullari-Pontois (Abrams).
The scale comprised of 21 items which measured intuitive dimensions of ingenuity (6 items), risk propensity (4 items), preemption (5 items) and opportunity recognition (6 items).
We used pathways from three manually-curated data sources: Biocarta (208 pathways, 1,321 unique genes) (http://www.biocarta.com), Ingenuity (166 pathways, 4,085 unique genes) (http://www.ingenuity.com) and GeneGo (515 pathways, 2,685 unique genes) (http://www.genego.com).
In line with this, integrin signalling emerged as one of the top relevant biological pathways (Ingenuity score=2.65E 03).
Follow-up analysis with Ingenuity® Pathway Analysis (IPA) software v9.0-3210 (Ingenuity _ENREF_31; http://www.qiagen.com/ingenuity) provided additional correlations between identified proteins and was used to generate functional networks as described previously (Kodavanti et al. 2011).
Furthermore, ERK/MAPK (Ingenuity score=9.38E 03) was the second top signalling pathway, known to have a key role in the pathogenesis of cutaneous melanoma (Meier et al, 2005), thus confirming the reliability of our study design.
Gene sets were extracted from public (KEGG [ 19], Panther [ 20]), commercial (GeneGO [ 21] and Ingenuity [ 22]) databases.
Interaction data in the network was licensed from several commercial vendors including Ingenuity [ 91], Jubilant [ 92], GeneGO [ 93], NetPro [ 94] and HPRD [ 95].
Pathway analysis of these 58 proteins identified four significant networks using Ingenuity (Figure 2 and Figure S1) and five networks with MetaCore's workflow (Figure S2).
Among the 116 genes differentially expressed, Ingenuity identified 92 genes contributing to a total of 10 functional networks (Table 3).
