The data themselves also present numerous challenges because of the laboratory methods by which they are extracted [ 29], the complex informatics procedures by which they are assembled [ 28, 30], and the diversity of molecular variation at the level of expression that they reflect (e.g. alternative splice variants; [ 29]).
