To evaluate anti-inflammatory activity, we measured edema, leukocyte count, myeloperoxidase activity and cytokines levels in carrageenan-induced inflammation tests.
STI and inflammation testing: Urine was tested for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae using a commercial diagnostic test (Amplicor CT/NG PCR; Roche Diagnostics, Indianapolis IN).
In the array of 84 genes involved in inflammation tested, the expression of 12 was modified by the bifidobacteria.
The characteristics of the patients, together with the results of the haematological and inflammation tests (including ferritin) are provided in Table 1.
The physical examination covered inspection of postural aspects, signs of inflammation, tests of swelling, locating tender areas, patellofemoral joint compression, crepitus, knee extensor and flexor strength, joint laxity, range of motion and meniscus tests (see table 1).
Common tests include stool tests for malabsorption and inflammation, blood tests for inflammation, breath hydrogen test to assess bacterial load and nutrient and essential fatty acid deficiencies.
Metal allergy as a contributing factor was suggested by the observed linkage between peri-implant lymphocytic inflammation, patch test reactivity to metals, and enhanced lymphocyte transformation test (LTT) response to metals in a series of such patients [ 16].
Although CRP is a widely used marker of inflammation, the test is not established to be highly sensitive or specific to CKD, and the lack of data on other inflammatory markers such as interleukins and TNF-α may limit our ability to interpret a broader assignment of inflammation to the observed racial/ethnic differences in CKD.
The latter factor may be of interest because some previously investigated proteins, such as procalcitonin, did not show differences when tested once, whilst they appeared to be promising factors in distinguishing between infection and inflammation when tested daily [ 17, 39].
