However, Hawley et al. (32 ) did not detect R. felis DNA in cats naturally infested with R. felis infected cat fleas, nor did the authors of a recent study find an association between rickettsial DNA or antibodies and the presence of fever in clinically ill cats (33 ).

Eight cats naturally infested with the harvest mite Neotrombicula autumnalis were treated with selamectin at 6 mg/kg and two days later the clinical signs associated with the infection had subsided and all mites were dead [ 24].
Mixed populations of fleas were also detected in 3 cats; 2 were infested with C. felis and A. erinacei, and 1 with P. irritans and C. felis.
Cats reported to have been infested with fleas during the preceding 6 months were more likely than cats without fleas to be seropositive (12 ), and the seroprevalence of B. henselae is higher in the pet cat population in warm, humid climates than in cold, dry climates because Ct. felis fleas are more common in warmer climates (10 ).
In southern California, opossums infested with R. typhi– and R. felis infected cat fleas (C. felis) have been associated with a shift of fleaborne rickettsioses from the urban center of Los Angles to suburban areas (14 ).
