Infection states were as follows: susceptible (S; an individual is susceptible if he or she is at risk of infection); infected (I; an individual who is currently infected; infected individuals are assumed to be both infectious and DNA positive); and recovered (R; an individual in this infection state has resolved his or her infection, tests HPV DNA negative, and is fully immune to re-infection).
We defined infection status as not infected, infected by a single HPV type, or infected by multiple HPV types.
For each of the 9 combinations of group (black, red, green) and environment (uninfected, infected, infected & stressed), Hurd et al. [ 13] blocked the three genotypes (unselected control, refractory, highly susceptible) by feeding them on the same mouse (see Additional file 1).
Samples were stored at −70°C until the proportion of mosquitoes with infected bodies (infected), infected legs (disseminated), and infected saliva (transmitted) was determined by plaque assay.

The lungs of other infected groups (Infected, Infected/T, Adjuvant, Adjuvant/T and rPb27) presented a desorganized granulome with a great number of viable yeast cells of P. brasiliensis (Fig. 5).
□ Non-infected ∎: Infected.
The definition of infection was "infected" versus "non-infected" with the former subdivided into "culture positive" and "culture negative" infection subgroups.
Whereas, when ki = 0.7ki-1, at steady state ∼77% of the infected cells are singly infected, ∼19% are doubly infected, ∼3.4% are triply infected, ∼0.5% are quadruply infected, ∼0.04% are quintuply infected, and ∼0.002% are hextuply infected.
We find at that steady state that ∼70% of the infected cells are singly infected, ∼21% are doubly infected, ∼6% are triply infected, ∼2% are quadruply infected, ∼0.5% are quintuply infected, and ∼0.2% are hextuply infected when ki = k0.
Many studies about peroxidases in plants have been reported to response to the pathogen infection, such as Arabidopsis infected by Fusarium, rice infected by Pyricularia grisea and strawberry leaves inoculated with Colletotrichum (Chivasa et al. 2006; Fang et al. 2012).
In disease-related studies it is comparable to the "force of infection," the number of susceptible individuals each infected individual further infects.
