This paper describes the process of designing, implementing, and subsequently modifying the Breastfeeding, Antiretrovirals, and Nutrition, (BAN) Study, a large, on-going, randomized breastfeeding intervention trial of HIV-infected women and their infants conducted at a single-site in Lilongwe, Malawi.
