There were no complications (e.g. return to OR, prolonged intubation) in either this cohort or the infant controls.
For three CLM (N200, Map1b, Tbr1) progressively greater intensity and frequency of cortical neuronal staining was noted in older children and adults compared to infant controls (Fig. 1b, g).
Skin prick testing was performed for 169 infants (control group, 84; GOS group, 85); 3 were positive in the control group (egg, 1; cow's milk, 2) and 6 in the GOS group (egg, 6; cow's milk, 2; fish, 1).
At enrolment, the faecal subsample included 81 infants (control group, 37; GOS group, 44); 12 were excluded due to parental decision, the introduction of a non-study formula, or improper faecal sample delivery or preservation.
One possible contributing factor may be the reduction in prevalence of infants sleeping on their side, which has more than halved among both SIDS infants and control infants compared with such infants in our earlier study.
Parents recorded significantly fewer wakes for intervention infants than control infants; 31.1 % of intervention infants compared to 60.4%% control infants had ≥2 night wakes (Table 4).
More SIDS infants than control infants slept on a pillow; for half of these SIDS infants this included the entire body and various sleeping environments: a cot (n=6), the parents' bed (n=7), and cosleeping on a sofa (n=3).
8 11 The unexpected decline in the prevalence of dummy use among both SIDS infants and control infants may be related to the increase in breast feeding among mothers of both SIDS infants (70% attempted in this study compared with 44% in the Confidential Enquiry into Stillbirths and Deaths in Infancy study) and random control infants (79% and 60%, respectively).
