"The baby genius industry is notorious for marketing products as educational, when in fact there is no evidence that they are," said Susan Linn, the director of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, which is based in Boston.

"When I spoke to my students about what their image of a web engineer or software developer is, they thought that if they're black and in the tech industry, they're geniuses and they must've been coding since they were eight," Mesfun said.
But the industry's culture of genius suggests a fixed mindset is driving views about intelligence, talents and abilities.
