Western researchers and academics are becoming more appreciative of the need to work with Indigenous researchers as part of decolonising research methodologies and, to incorporate appropriate processes in research with Indigenous people.
This approach may have also resulted in fewer Indigenous researchers being identified, as previous research has shown that few Indigenous people are included as authors on journal articles about Indigenous health [ 24].
Further efforts to increase research capacity are still required, with a high priority on training Indigenous researchers, as well as a greater focus on evaluation and intervention-based research [ 17, 24].
Only in the past few decades has there been a concerted effort to reform practices, with the development of ethical guidelines [ 4, 5], a focus on collaborative research models and acknowledgement of the need to train more Indigenous researchers [ 3, 6- 8].
According to the national health sector strategic plan 2011 2016, one of the persistent challenges is the limited multidisciplinary research, largely owing to the lack of highly qualified and experienced indigenous researchers [ 2].
Interviews were conducted by Indigenous researchers with mental health experience, who were trained in the use of the research tools, ethical and emergency care procedures.
Tribal and indigenous researchers presented six of the seven talks in our session.
We also sought to highlight work on the environment and humans authored by tribal and indigenous researchers.
