When diagnosing the current situation of the WS – more precisely, the relationship between different welfare indicators – we could combine conventional literature analysis with fuzzy set analysis, synergy and trade-off analysis.
As humans became more sophisticated, the meaning of success transformed into indicators we could actually quantify: things like building a business, achieving artistic greatness, or changing the world.
For example, although we were able to find trends over time in quality indicators, we could not identify certain key years or time periods in which the quality increased more than others.
However, for other indicators we could not fit a statistically significant model, which means that their predictive value for the studied population was limited.
The aim of this strategy was to test whether, after including municipal-level indicators, we could reduce the unexplained variance of Y across geographical areas of Umbria (REM-Logit specification).
And to figure this out, my colleagues and I at NPR's "Planet Money" went searching for as many shopping-based indicators as we could find, hoping some would unlock a hidden story about what Americans are feeling and where the country is headed.
