The NSDUH creates a categorical mental illness indicator from responses to survey questions, including total scores from the psychological distress and impairment scales, the predicted probability of serious mental illness (SMI), and indicators of various levels of mental illness.

State and Local Government Authority planners mostly rely on information from national surveys such as Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey and Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey to assess and monitor progress of their health indices.
Unfortunately, there is no comparable, ongoing federal effort to identify challenges facing girls and women of color, review data and develop indicators to measure their progress, survey federal programs to see what is working and or not working for them, or, crucially, raise $300 million from private sources to develop solutions for them.
