In this study, we investigated the indications of red blood cell transfusion and its impact on outcome in a large cohort of patients with hematological malignancies who were admitted to the ICU for the main diagnosis of severe sepsis and septic shock.

Regressions of these hits on the size of database were highly significant, with R2 values of nearly 1.0, and with no indication of a red algal deviation from the trend for Phythophthora genomes.
However, even the fact that low values of the viscous component alone in the range of low shear rates (γ0′ → 0) are accompanied by high value of η′ for high shear rates may be an indication of faster red cells aggregability [ 18].
The outcome, that is, the intensity of the complement reaction, is categorized through the percentaged indication of dead (red colored) cells using a score system of the National Institute of Health (Washington, USA) as shown: score 1: <10% (negative), score 2: 10 20% (doubtfully positive), score 4: 20 50% (weakly positive), score 6: 50 80% (positive), and score 8: 80–100% (strongly positive).
The haemoglobin threshold for transfusion was 7.29 g/dl and depended on the indication of the red cell transfusion: 6.16 g/dl for urgent medical pathologies, 6.22 g/dl for chronic medical pathologies, 7.74 g/dl for urgent surgical pathologies, 10.38 g/dl for elective surgery, 6.15 g/dl for urgent obstetrical pathologies.
Acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (AUGIB) is the commonest reason for hospitalization with hemorrhage in the UK and the leading indication for transfusion of red blood cells (RBCs).
Postoperatively the attending nurse recorded the haematocrit, drain losses, and the use of and indications for red cells and clotting factors.
More formal statistical analysis might have given a more precise indication of the overall effect of red cell transfusion on mortality, but would have ignored the significant amount of clinical and methodological heterogeneity between studies which we identified a priori and which was very apparent in the analysis done by Marik and Corwin.
