In an indication of official attitudes to police brutality, minister Alam said he had no concerns about either the death, or the potential loss of a key witness.
"I think it's an indication of many officials realizing how bad it is for their constituents, and it also buys officials a lot of really good P.R.," said Jessica Levinson, director of political reform at the Center for Governmental Studies, a nonpartisan research group in Los Angeles.
That determination was made quickly, and the minister, Mohammed Zidan, gave no indication of how officials had reached that conclusion.
The most recent indication of that, officials and environmentalists said, is a report released in May by Riverkeeper, a Tarrytown-based environmental-watchdog group, claiming that 10 of the Hudson's 13 key fish species have declined since tracking began in the 1980s.
There is no indication of which official within each of these companies might have responded to the e-mail query or on the Web site: whether, for instance, someone in fact responsible for making an investment decision, or a public relations officer tasked with responding to the U.N. organization's survey.
