"Investigations of any community that are not based upon indications of crime create fear, and erode the confidence of a community in the power of a legal system to protect it," said Paul Chevigny, a professor of law at New York University and one of five attorneys on the case.
Reasonable people take as a clear indication of underlying crime such activity as lying about that crime, suborning perjury about it in others, and intimidating scientific witnesses.
"Twenty-eight days is not an indication of a crime spike," said Detective Walter Burnes, a police spokesman.
[The Pistorius case] is not an indication of widespread violent crime in the country… Crime has dropped and more people feel safe".
He received probation, and there's no indication of any subsequent crime.
Once a gun is found, assuming there is no indication of a federal crime, local laws apply.
"There is no indication of a hate crime," Sheriff Ron Watkins of Marion County said in a radio interview when asked about the reported confessions of the defendants.
