The Volkswagen Road Joy microsite was intended to be an engaging repository of inspiring user-gen videos, but because the all-Flash site didn't allow for deep links, sharing, voting or commenting, or indexing the campaign languished.
But the Project for Excellence in Journalism, a research institute that compiles a weekly index of campaign coverage by 48 news outlets, said that by one measure Mr. Obama had outpaced Mrs. Clinton beginning in mid-February — prominent mentions in that coverage.
The letter calls the Index the "Campaign to Quiet American Business".
And Emily Butselaar, of the Index on Censorship campaign group, said disproportionate sentences and the Government's rhetoric on banning social media during unrest were "undermining our international reputation as a bastion of free expression and justice".

But Google opposes the move and anti-censorship campaign Index on Censorship has warned about the dangers of allowing people to whitewash their personal history.
There's natural variation in Twitter chatter and political polls, which often swing wildly away from what the nation actually believes (which is why the best campaign indices average polls together).
Mike Harris, the head of advocacy at free-speech campaign group Index on Censorship, added: "Index welcomes both high court rulings, which we hope heralds the end of libel tourism, which has had a chilling effect on free speech around the world.
When he endorsed inflation indexing during his 2002 campaign for governor, he said it would let businesses plan better than they could with intermittent minimum wage increases at the whim of politicians.
Other signatories include campaign groups Index on Censorship and Article 19.
