The aim of our study was to conduct an indepth comparison between both consensus definitions in a large retrospective cohort of patients undergoing cardiac surgery at a single center and to determine the influence of the three modifications made from RIFLE to AKIN.
The application of age sex time standardisation, using the INDEPTH 2013 population standard, further enabled comparisons of mortality over time and place to be made objectively.
Conversely, comparisons of our findings with public domain INDEPTH data 56 for 1619 and 207 neonatal deaths from Bangladesh and India, respectively, identify higher CSMFs of asphyxia and lower proportions of other unspecified/indeterminate causes in our data.
The basic rates of all-cause childhood mortality are reasonably congruent between these sources and the findings from the INDEPTH sites, although this is by no means a precise comparison (specific population site measurements versus national estimates).
Table 2 enables comparisons of malaria-specific mortality rates for the countries with INDEPTH sites reporting here, for the under-5 and 5-plus age groups, with other sources of estimates.
They allow auditing of interventions, comparison between services, and the formation of large datasets for indepth epidemiologic analysis.
The perennial concern that some early neonatal deaths may have been considered as stillbirths (37), and therefore not registered as deaths, may have been an issue at some of the INDEPTH sites in Africa that registered fairly low neonatal mortality rates in comparison to infant mortality.
Table 2 shows estimates of malaria-specific mortality rates for the countries with INDEPTH sites reporting here, for the under-5 and 5-plus age groups for comparison with other sources of malaria mortality estimates.
