Given a limited sample size, it is possible to discover a phase transition by increasing the penalization; in this case a subset of the support may be recovered.
Increasing the level of penalization leads to greater sparsity, effectively making λ a continuous model selection parameter.
A range of standard deviation multiples was used, from 0.5 to 5.0 in steps of 0.5 (i.e. decreasing penalization with increasing threshold).
Mean PRIAL values for Σ G for different strategies to determine ψ are summarized in Table 2 for selected penalties, q = 5 traits and s = 100 sires, together with the average proportion of replicates for which penalization increased rather than decreased the loss in Σ G. Corresponding PRIAL values for all penalties for strategies V∞, CV3 and L5% are given in Table 1.
This new policy, a clear shift away from the Department's practice of the past, is consistent with the Sessions Justice Department's increasing sensitivity to the over-penalization of corporate wrongdoing.
For our application, however, it was found to be only moderately successful, with errors in estimating ψ limiting achieved PRIAL and increasing the proportion of replicates for which penalization was detrimental.
It can be seen that the penalty on outliers is increasing with p. Indeed, as p→0 the penalty of the corresponding cost function on non-zero values approaches l0-norm cost function (where any non-zero value is equally penalized and there is no penalization of larger values).
To get nearly unbiased estimates penalization should not be too strong, thus increasing the chance of irrelevant features to be included in the model.
Setting λ to a large value increases the amount of penalization, setting more regression coefficients to 0. Many fast algorithms are available for solving Equation (3) (Efron et al., 2004; Tibshirani, 1996).
Using this modified scheme, the penalization will be 2 χ α,4 + χ α,12, which constitutes considerable savings, thereby increasing better prediction ratio (in terms of sensitivity and specificity).
