Battery energy storage systems (BESSs), while at the moment still expensive, are from a technical point of view exceptionally well suited to support a distribution system operator (DSO) in the challenges created by increasing distributed, fluctuating and uncertain generation from renewable energy sources (RES), as well as by the unbundling of electricity retailing and grid operation.
Interest in electrical energy storage systems is increasing as the opportunities for their application become more compelling in an industry with a back-drop of ageing assets, increasing distributed generation and a desire to transform networks into Smart Grids.
Implementation of these technologies will allow energetic valorization of waste tires in Brazil, solving their disposal problems, creating jobs, reducing negative disposal environmental impacts in landfills, and increasing distributed generation of electricity.
Increasing distributed energy resources in the active distribution system requires greater flexibility of active management and better utilization of existing network assets.
Government intervention may be required to direct network operators to address technical implications of increased distributed generation and redevelop tariff models to allow fair cost recovery of network assets.
However, the coupling between the two should not be ignored due to fluctuations resulting from increased distributed energy resources and variability in both supply and demand.
This suggests progressive functional development of the DMN as well as of cognitive control networks between childhood and adulthood through simultaneous progressive integration (increased distributed long-distance connections) and segregation (diminished local short-distance connections), both of which are likely related to progressive myelination and synaptic pruning, respectively [ 82, 83].
