To estimate the number of sections to analyse in each patient to minimize intrapatient variability, we calculated the difference between the mean values in all sections and those obtained from a 2.5 mm2 randomly selected area from an increasing number of sections.
These results were confirmed by TUNEL-staining of quadriceps sections, which showed increased number of apoptotic nuclei as compared with WT (wild-type; 6.9% and knock in: 28.9%, P<0.05) (Figure 5D,E).
In electron microscopy analysis, apart from some pathological signs (aberrant Schwann cell proliferation, increased number of macrophages) observed on DMSXL thin nerve sections, a severe and significant loss (41%; P<0.01) in the number of unmyelinated axons was found (Fig. 5).

The increasing number of caesarean sections due to maternal obesity is also placing a huge financial strain on the National Health Service (NHS).
Placenta creta was originally diagnosed in 1930 [ 6] and its incidence has increased over the years (1 : 2,510 in 1980 [ 7] and 1 : 533 in 2002 [ 8]), closely associated with the incidence of placenta previa and increasing number of Cesarean sections [ 8– 12].
We also compared cardiomyocyte numbers in heart sections (obtained at a fixed distance of 3 mm from the apex) and found increased numbers of myocytes in sections obtained from CDC-treated hearts compared to controls (Fig 10J).
Using TRAP activity staining we found increased numbers of osteoclasts in spine sections from transgenic mice (Figure 8A), which was subsequently confirmed by histomorphometry (Figure 8B).
Meanwhile, professional associations and health observers, such as the World Health Organization, warn on the increasing number of elective caesarean sections in industrialized countries, which generate supplementary costs and carry greater health risks for the mother and child [ 16, 17].
