Most analysts are looking for a rate increase of 25 basis points, but some more pessimistic soothsayers expect a hike of a full 50 basis points.
The index of yields on Fannie Mae guaranteed loans rose to 5.96percentt on Thursday, an increase of 13 basis points from the previous day.
At the last meeting, members Martin Weale and Spencer Dale both voted for an increase of 25 basis points, but notably changed their reasoning from "compelling" in March to "finely balanced" in April.
The minutes of the Feb. 1-2 meeting, when the Fed raised rates by a quarter-point, indicated that a few members were pressing then for an increase of 50 basis points "in order to provide greater assurance against a buildup of inflationary expectations and inflation" in subsequent months.
Regional Fed directors recommending an increase of 25 basis points in the discount rate before the Aug. 5 meeting agreed that economic activity was soft and financial markets were not yet stabilized, but they expressed greater concerns about inflationary expectations, according to the minutes.
Anthony Chan, managing director and chief economist at Banc One Investment Advisers in Columbus, Ohio, said, "Going into this confidence report, credit market investors painfully realized that the Fed is facing an economy that just doesn't seem to want to slow down despite the cumulative increase of 125 basis points in the federal funds rate".
The bank's latest Global Development Finance report predicts that an increase of ten basis points in the gap between the London Interbank-Offered Rate (LIBOR) and the overnight indexed-swap (OIS) rate, sustained over a quarter, should cause net lending to developing countries to drop by up to 3%.
At the five-year maturity, an increase of 50 basis points (0.5%) is plausible.
The classical PCE approach nevertheless faces the "curse of dimensionality", namely the exponential increase of the basis size with increasing input dimension.
On the other hand, we can also observe that the error of representation drops quickly with the increasing number of basis vectors in the dictionary.
