An increase in small hydropower operations is occurring in Switzerland, partly in response to available or anticipated subsidies.
The pressure for climate change mitigation through expansion of renewable energy with low carbon intensity and the political decision to phase out nuclear power are driving an increasing interest in hydropower generation.
All the riparian countries are primarily interested in hydropower for minimizing increased demands of electricity for domestic use, for irrigation, for flood regulation and for energy security.

The state also has large ownership stakes in hydropower stations and electricity plants.
