Implementation of syphilis screening programs can be hampered by operational and technical difficulties (2 – 4 ) such as inadequate training, poor supervision, inconsistent quality control, disruptions in receiving medical supplies, and erratic electricity or refrigeration facilities needed to perform the test or store its reagents (5 ).
Similarly, if the supervision was inconsistent or incentives were too small, their influence might be modest.
Family-related factors include familial aggregation of these behaviours, parenting behaviours such as poor parental supervision and inconsistent discipline, and pre- and peri-natal toxin exposure (e.g., maternal smoking).
