Alternative explanations that vindicate the assumed role of institutional practice in grounding obligations might be built on the basis of considerations of fair notice (cf. the doctrine Dworkin calls "conventionalism", Dworkin 1986) or other key principles of political morality, perhaps including considerations related to authority.
