Many non-native foodstuffs were introduced to the Hawaiian Islands during the early trading era, including plants such as beans, cabbage, onions, squash, pumpkins, melons, and oranges, as well as cash crops like tobacco, cotton, and sugar.

Marshes produce many products valued by humans, including edible plants such as wild rice and cranberries, fish, shellfish, waterfowl, crocodilians, turtles, and mammals, which are eaten or produce valuable fur, skins, and other products.
High levels of conservation of GI have already been demonstrated for seed plants, including monocotyledonous plants, such as rice (Oryza sativa) [ 57], Brachypodium [ 58], wheat [ 59], barley [ 40], and the eudicotyledons, such as pea [ 60].
