Mr. Turrell, who works with light and is probably best known for his labors since the late 1970s to transform an extinct Arizona volcano into a work of art, was sued in 2007 in federal district court in Manhattan by Michael Hue-Williams, whose gallery, Albion, represented him for more than a decade.
In 1981, it was Ms. Ryan, whose gallery specialized in 1930's W.P.A. material, who validated Mr. Cohen's interest in the subset of collecting.
"His work is a wonderful, ambitious cross between contemporary abstract expressionism and street art," said Bryce Wolkowitz, whose gallery in Chelsea represents Mr. Parlá in New York.
The art dealer Guillaume Sultana, whose gallery in the Marais district was swathed in a massive hand-dyed wall hanging by the Mexican artist Pia Camil this fall, suggested that revisiting so-called applied arts' materials and processes "actually offers artists much more freedom than a painting or a sculpture".
Paula Cooper, Mr. Serrano's New York dealer, whose gallery in Chelsea exhibited his "History of Sex" photographs in 1997, said she was horrified by the attack in Sweden.
"They have refused an incredible number of commands from very famous people," said Jerome de Noirmont, whose gallery in Paris represents them.
Last year's judge was Allen Stone whose gallery in Manhattan can be counted on to show zany works as well as objects of classic beauty.

Said Kenneth Pushkin, whose gallery in Santa Fe, N.M., sells Hebald's remaining work: "His work was very positive and bright.
"There is a particular emphasis on Chinese contemporary ink paintings," said Michael Goedhuis, whose gallery is participating in Asian Art in London.
Tracy Williams, whose gallery is in the West Village, is also focusing on lower-priced art.
