"This is just another indication that the economy is improving," said Gil Knight, a money manager with Allied Investment Advisors in Baltimore, which manages about $9 billion in assets.
Michael Bumkeun Cho, a portfolio manager at Samsung Asset Management in Seoul, South Korea, which manages $200 billion, specializes in the trading of exchange-traded funds, baskets of stocks or bonds that are easily traded.
"Psychologically, Japanese investors are very scarred," said Marc Desmidt, managing director at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers in Tokyo, which manages $7.8 billion in Japanese equities.
"Uncertainty prevails at the moment," said Tim Rees, director of investment strategy for the Clerical Medical Investment Group in London, which manages $100 billion in assets.

ValueAct Capital, based in San Francisco, which manages about $4.5 billion in assets, and Barington Companies Equity Partners are posting similar gains.
