In "The Recognitions," the famously undercelebrated doorstop by William Gaddis, the virtuosity of a painter who makes counterfeit "undiscovered" paintings by Flemish masters is the vehicle through which Gaddis questions the genuineness of other forms of art, life and religion.
He watched his two children, whom he clearly loved, grow up: "You each give me more to be proud of than 'J R.' (Throw in 'The Recognitions' too)." He may even have eventually convinced some people that he never actually read the book that was most often cited as his major influence.
"Have you ever thought," Gaddis writes in "The Recognitions," that "all the people you have met and all the people you will meet... are somewhere now right this instant being real?" With its diffuse collection of stories, "Men in Space" takes on Gaddis's challenge of keeping track of a vertiginous sequence of interlocking lives.
