A naturalistic effectiveness study in the Netherlands [ 33] investigated the effectiveness of 18-month, manualized MBT-DH in 45 patients with severe BPD and high comorbidity in terms of Axis I and Axis II disorders.
In terms of Axis II disorders, the deceased patients more often had schizoid (46.4% vs. 19.6%, respectively, P = 0.001) or dependent personality disorders (35.7% vs. 18.5%, respectively, P = 0.033) than did survivors.
Similarly, conceptualizing personality problems in terms of Axis-I problems might lead to an accumulation of unsuccessful treatments targeting the supposed Axis-I problem.
In fact, similar changes to those observed in prematurely-aged, calorie-restricted or long-lived individuals in terms of somatotropic axis dysregulation are seen in wild-type mice subjected to chronic oxidative or genotoxic stress [ 32- 34].
