The two variational benefits are that: (1) variation in the overlap phase is chiefly to be accounted for in terms of a compensatory alignment of genes leading to a maximum mutational redundancy, or (2) its inverse – aligning overlapping genes in order to encourage greater sequence mutability by promoting multiple amino acid replacements upon a single nucleotide mutation.
