Being independent in self-care and being able to communicate, were concepts most frequently referred to in relation to gaining independence.
These include a lack of choice and opportunity, low levels of self esteem in relation to gaining work, coping with the pressures of working while managing symptoms of mental illness, stigmatization [ 19- 22] and disincentives to employment that are embedded in the benefits system [ 22- 24].
