Due to the unfamiliarity of the study theme information about health research, register-based research and the ethical problems, legislation and current practises involving them was also provided in the questionnaire form placed strategically in between the questions (see Additional file 1).
Since there is no link in the questionnaire form between prescribed medications (in our case opioids) and diagnosis (ICD-9 codes), we were unable to determine with surety for what diagnosis opioids were being prescribed for.
