The principle of the US-navigated technique is to find the SCV at the supraclavicular level and to obtain a longitudinal view of the SCV and to allow access to the vein in-plane view (absolute control of the needle).
Selection of axial versus longitudinal (out-of-plane versus in-plane) view during puncture was at the discretion of the intensivist performing the procedure, although the axial view was utilized in most instances to facilitate puncture in the midline.
If the particles do not all have the same in-plane view, the untilted images must first be sorted out into groups of similar views by classification, so the tilted views can be grouped according to their corresponding in-plane orientations.
A specially designed test cell and neutron radiography set-up allows for studying the water distribution in an in-plane viewing direction.
Furthermore, a 24-gauge catheter can appear to be in the same plane as a thin target vein on in-plane views, even in unsuccessful catheterisation.
Typical scanning electron microscopy [SEM] images of the SiNWs formed by a single-step MACE process are shown in Figure 1: in a1 (plane view) and a2 (cross section), we see the case of short NWs (5-μm long), which are relatively straight and separated from each other, while in b1 (plane view) and b2 (cross section), we see the case of longer NWs (20-μm long).
In the cross-sectional images, the PAA mask is present; in the plane view images, it is removed, revealing the nanopatterned Si surface.
