Joint replacement is an effective treatment in late-stage arthritis of the hip and knee and leads to improvement in function, pain, performance in activities of daily living, and quality of life in the oldest patients (Brander et al. 1997, Jones et al. 2001, Ethgen et al. 2004, Hamel et al. 2008).
