We consider ten Sertoli cells in one cross-section (Hogarth and Griswold, 2010; Nel-Themaat et al., 2011; Ray et al., 2012) (newly generated, see the Experiments subsection).
Positive follicles were not uniformly distributed but showed an irregular distribution with strong labelling in several adjacent follicles on one cross section (fig 2 U-Y), and fewer or no positive follicles on a different transverse or longitudinal level.
The reciprocal shifting of these axonemes along the length of the sperm, together with their possible shortening and overlapping for short distances, could explain why in some species it is never possible to observe the complete set of 27 microtubular elements in any one cross section.

Fourth, the polarization curves of two different cross sections may intersect, and as a result, one cross section may have a greater maximum power but at the same time lower average power in comparison to the other one.
