Education research conducted in the classroom often compares the effect of a new teaching strategy or activity on the performance of students in one class with the performance of students in another class, taught either concurrently or at different times by the same instructor(s) (Allain and Williams 2006; Armstrong et al., 2007; Freeman et al., 2007; Moravec et al., 2010).
