In the present meta-analysis we synthesized findings from 27 independent samples from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effectiveness of 20 different intervention programs aimed at (i) preventing the occurrence of child maltreatment in the general population or with at-risk but non-maltreating families, or (ii) reducing the incidence of child maltreatment in maltreating families.

Significant effects were however found for intervention programs reducing child maltreatment in maltreating families and for interventions that provide parent training.

Concerning programs that target a clearly defined population, programs that prevent the occurrence of child maltreatment in at-risk, but non-maltreating families, can be distinguished from programs that reduce the incidence of child maltreatment in maltreating families.

Secondly, we found significant intervention effects in maltreating samples, but not in at-risk samples, indicating that programs are only effective in reducing (but not preventing) child maltreatment.

They may have neither time nor interest; they may lead especially chaotic and disorganized lives and be unable to make arrangements to visit a clinic – a reason which may often be found in maltreating families.

However, the fact that we did find six RCTs in maltreating families and 20 RCTs in at-risk families, including one study in Iran, indicates that it is possible to carry out rigorous effectiveness studies in various populations.

Since the latest meta-analysis was published in 2008 [ 36], findings from new RCT studies have supported the existing evidence for the effectiveness of video feedback in comparison to controls, in improving parental sensitivity [ 41, 42], the broader concept of parent child interactions [ 43], or children's externalizing and internalizing problems in maltreating families [ 41].
