Images in the center (a a,b a,c a, and d a ) show the 2D AFM images, while images of the right are in line profiles (a b,b b,c b, and d b ) of the corresponding samples to the 2D AFM images of the center.
In line profiles, across the two facets (as is normally observed in HRTEM), they appear quite similar in roughness at this stage, but from the STM top view, we can see that the {111}B-type facets have steps toward the interfaces of the adjacent {110}-type facets in two ⟨112⟩B-type directions; thus, in fact, the {111}B-type is more rough already at this stage.

A combination of sampling by broadside fan-recordings and in-line profiling allows us to image increases in Moho depth towards the centre of the plateau.

When there was a peak in relative line profiles for one combination of two flats, the corresponding peak could appear in all absolute line profiles of A, B, and C flats in the three-flat method.
Some high peaks are visible in the line profiles which correspond to the white particles and may be some dirt particles (as the measurements were done at ambient conditions).
The change of surface morphology is also clearly depicted in cross-sectional line profiles in Fig. 9 a-1), (d-1).
As sharply compared in the cross-sectional line profiles in Fig. 2 a-1), (d-1), the height of resulting nanostructures were radically increased with the increased DAs from 2 to 6 nm.
