Fred Gray Sr., the lawyer who defended Rosa Parks in her landmark bus segregation case and represented victims of the infamous Tuskegee syphilis experiment, has become the first black president of the Alabama Bar Association.
Interviewed by Robert Peston last week, Chakrabarti correctly anticipated, after she spoke as shadow attorney general about people "deeply scarred" by the 11-plus, that she'd be asked why she volunteered her own child for segregation, in her case to a famous public school.
Race matters, she argues, because she and her white partner lack the "cultural competency" to help their child, whose physical features are "typical of an African American girl," to navigate the challenges of racial bias and residential segregation in her "all-white community" and "often unconsciously insensitive family".
The response of prison staff was to isolate her in the segregation unit, on one occasion for 20 days, as if her behaviour could be controlled by punishment.

Today, as she serves her sentence in the segregation unit of a British prison, Connelly is said to be fully aware of the contempt in which she is held.
